China tours from Hong Kong
Hong Kong is the easiest place in Asia to start a China trip — and the place where people most often pick the wrong border crossing.
The four ways to cross
| Route | Time | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| West Kowloon → Shenzhen North (high-speed rail) | 18 min | Anyone continuing to Guangzhou, Guilin or beyond |
| West Kowloon → Guangzhou South | 47 min | Starting in Guangdong rather than Shenzhen |
| Lo Wu / Lok Ma Chau → Shenzhen (MTR + walk) | 45–70 min | Cheapest, but you queue at the border on foot |
| Hong Kong → mainland flight | 1–3 h | Going straight to Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu or Xi’an |
The high-speed rail from West Kowloon is the single best piece of infrastructure for this trip. It puts you in Guangzhou in 47 minutes, and Guangzhou is a two-hour train from Guilin.
The visa question decides everything
Hong Kong has its own immigration rules. Entering the mainland is a separate act, and whether you need a visa depends on your passport and on which entry scheme you use. For many European passports the 30-day visa-free entry applies at any port, including the land crossings. Others need a visa arranged in advance — and you cannot get one at the border.
Two exceptions worth knowing: the 240-hour transit visa-free scheme requires an onward ticket to a third country, and it does not work if you are simply returning to Hong Kong. Check the detail on our visa and entry page before booking flights.
Three routes that start in Hong Kong
- Hong Kong → Guilin → Yangshuo → Shanghai (8 days) — the shortest route that still feels like China rather than a city break.
- Hong Kong → Guangzhou → Guilin → Chengdu (10 days) — Cantonese food, karst scenery, pandas.
- Hong Kong → Beijing → Xi’an → Shanghai (12 days) — fly north first, work south, finish in Shanghai.
All three are built from our eight routes; the Hong Kong leg is added as a transfer, not as a separate product.
What Hong Kong adds, honestly
Two useful nights, not five. The Star Ferry, the Peak, and a dim sum morning are worth it; a week in Hong Kong is a different holiday. Most of our guests use it as an arrival buffer — which also means a missed connection does not ruin the trip.
Do we need a visa for the mainland if we fly into Hong Kong?
Depends on your passport. Many European passports get 30 days visa-free at any port; others need a visa arranged before arrival. Hong Kong immigration is separate from mainland immigration.
Is the high-speed rail from West Kowloon easy?
Yes — but book ahead in peak season and arrive 45 minutes early: you clear mainland immigration inside the station.
Can we visit Shenzhen for a day?
Yes, and it is a good use of a day if you want to see the contrast. Bring your passport; the border is a real border.
How many nights in Hong Kong do you recommend?
Two, at the start. More only if Hong Kong is a destination in its own right.
Can the tour start in Hong Kong itself?
We can arrange the Hong Kong days, but our guiding and vehicles operate on the mainland. In Hong Kong we book hotels and transfers, not guides.
