7 days in China: what actually fits

Seven days buys you two cities and one train ride — done well. It does not buy you four cities, and any plan that promises four is a plan spent in transit.

The shape that works

Beijing for three nights, one high-speed train to Xi’an, Xi’an for two nights, fly home from Xi’an. That is five full days on the ground and two travel days, which is what seven calendar days actually contains once you subtract the long-haul flight.

Route at a glance: Beijing → Xi’an.

This is exactly our 7-day Imperial Capitals route, which is the version we have actually driven.

What you cannot fit

  • Guilin or Yangshuo — the flight alone costs you a day and a half.
  • Chengdu pandas plus Xi’an: you would get one full day in each and spend two in airports.
  • Shanghai as a third city: possible, but only by cutting Xi’an to one night, which is not worth it.
  • A Yangtze cruise: it needs three to four nights by itself.

If you have seven days and want nature

Swap Xi’an for Chengdu and Leshan: Beijing (3) → Chengdu (3) → home. You trade imperial history for pandas and a 71-metre Buddha, and you keep the same number of internal moves. That is our 7-day pandas route.

What drives the price

Four things: the month (April, May, September and October cost more), hotel category, how many of you there are, and whether you fly or take the train between cities. Domestic flights in China are cheap but airport time is expensive in a seven-day trip — the train is usually the better buy.

How to make seven days feel longer

  • One base per city, no hotel changes mid-city.
  • Book the wall for day two, not day one: jet lag ruins photographs.
  • Leave one afternoon completely empty. It is the day people remember.
  • Fly into Beijing and out of Xi’an — never backtrack.
Is 7 days enough for a first China trip?

For two cities, yes. For “China”, no — and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling a coach tour.

Should we start in Beijing or Shanghai?

Beijing. It is the stronger opening and the flights are usually cheaper.

Can we add Shanghai?

Only by removing Xi’an or cutting Beijing to two nights. Both are worse trades.

Train or flight from Beijing to Xi’an?

Train: 4.5 hours city centre to city centre, versus 2 hours flying plus 3 hours of airport.

Is this a fixed product?

The day-by-day above is our Imperial Capitals route. It can be re-paced, extended or shortened.
