The best time to visit China
There is no single best month for China. There is a best month for each region — and three weeks a year when you should not travel at all.
The three weeks to avoid
- Chinese New Year — late January to mid-February, dates move every year. Two weeks of the largest domestic migration on earth.
- Golden Week — 1–7 October. Every site at capacity, every train sold out.
- Labour Day — 1–5 May. Short, but intense.
Outside those windows, "crowded" in China means something different from what it means in Europe.
Region by region
| Region | Best months | Avoid | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beijing & the north | April–May, September–October | July–August heat, December–February cold | The Wall is at its best in autumn |
| Xi’an | March–May, September–November | July–August | The Terracotta pits are unheated in winter |
| Shanghai & the east | March–May, October–November | June plum rain, August heat | Typhoon season runs August–September |
| Yunnan | March–May, October–November | July–August rain | Highland: cold nights year-round |
| Guilin & Yangshuo | April–June, September–October | July–August | River clarity is best after the rains |
| Zhangjiajie | April–June, September–November | July–August crowds | Mist is beautiful but can hide the peaks |
| Harbin | December–February for ice, June–August for cool | January cold snaps | The ice festival opens in late December |
| Tibet | May–October | November–March | Altitude, not weather, is the limiting factor |
| Xinjiang | May–June, September–October | July–August heat | Distances are the real cost |
Shoulder season is the answer
Late April to early June, and mid-September to late October. You get most of the weather, half the crowds, and the transport actually has seats.
Month by month, in one line each
- January — Harbin ice, everything else cold and quiet.
- February — Chinese New Year; avoid, unless you want to see it deliberately.
- March — south warms up, north still grey.
- April — the best all-round month begins.
- May — excellent, except the first week.
- June — hot in the east, perfect in Yunnan and the north-west.
- July — hot, wet, crowded; go high or go north.
- August — same, plus typhoons on the coast.
- September — the second great month.
- October — best light of the year, except Golden Week.
- November — dry and quiet; cold in the north.
- December — Harbin, and little else outdoors.
Weather to plan around, not fear
Rain in the south is usually an afternoon shower, not a lost day. Heat in the east is real but manageable with an early start and a long lunch. The only weather we genuinely re-route around is typhoon season on the coast and heavy snow on mountain roads.
When is the cheapest time to travel?
November to March, excluding Chinese New Year.
Is summer really unbearable?
Beijing reaches 33–36°C in July. Yunnan and the north-west are fine at the same time.
Can we see pandas at any time of year?
Yes. Mornings are always better — they eat, then sleep.
What is the best single month for a first trip?
Late April or October.
Does the Great Wall close in winter?
No, but the cable car can close for wind and the steps ice over.
