No Shopping Stops — What We Guarantee

Almost every China tour page says “no shopping”. Very few say what that means operationally, and fewer still put a remedy behind it. This page does both, because it is the single clearest difference between booking a licensed operator directly and booking through a reseller.

What we guarantee

  • No shopping stops. Not one on any itinerary, including the ones described as cultural visits.
  • No factory visits and no “tea ceremony”, “silk workshop” or “jade museum” stops that exist to sell. Where a genuine craft experience appears in our itineraries, it is a workshop where you make something, it is in the plan by name, and nothing is for sale.
  • No commissions. Our guides and drivers take nothing from any shop, so they have no reason to steer you anywhere. That is also why they will tell you when a sight is not worth your time.
  • Nothing compulsory on the ground. Optional experiences are presented as optional, with the price stated before you decide.

Why this is structural, not a promise

Commission-based shopping exists because the shop pays the guide, and the guide’s income depends on it. We do not operate that way: our guides are paid by us, work to an itinerary we contract, and are not compensated on your spending. A shopping stop would cost us money, not make it.

If you want to buy something

Ask. We will point you at reputable shops and markets, help you understand what a fair price looks like, and stay out of the transaction. The decision, and the money, are entirely yours.

What you are buyingWhat to know
Pu-erh tea“Ancient tree”, “aged” and “factory direct” are largely unverifiable sales language. Buy from a brand shop and keep the receipt.
SilverLook for an S999 or S925 stamp and insist on pricing by weight.
Jade and jadeiteNot a market for non-specialists, and especially not at scenic-area shops.
Tibetan medicine, cordyceps, saffronEfficacy claims are routinely exaggerated and prices inflated. Cordyceps cannot legally be taken out of the country.
Tea, coffee, dried mushrooms, flower cakesLow risk from a reputable supermarket, and easy to post home.

Tax refunds

Only shops inside the tax-refund network can issue the forms, and it usually requires a same-day, same-store purchase above ¥500, processed at the airport on departure. Look for the “Tax Free” sign, and ask us when you are shopping rather than at the airport.

If anyone who is not our staff tries to sell you something using the words “government subsidy”, “limited-time special price” or “blessed by a monk”, walk away. These are the standard retail scams aimed at tour groups.

Common questions

Do your tours really have no shopping stops?
None. It is written into the itinerary and the contract, and our guides are not compensated on your spending.
Can we stop somewhere if we want to shop?
Yes — ask your guide and they will take you somewhere reputable. The difference is that it is your choice and your timing, not a scheduled stop.
Is a workshop visit a shopping stop?
No, if you make something and nothing is for sale. Ours are workshops where you do the work: noodles, silk fans, silver, tie-dye, ice carving.
What if a guide takes us to a shop anyway?
Tell us immediately, on the trip, and we will put it right that day. A complaint after you get home is much harder to fix.
