Hiking in China: four walks that are worth it
China is not a hiking destination in the way Nepal is — but four walks here are world-class, and three of them need no permit at all.
The four
| Walk | Distance / time | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Jinshanling–Simatai Great Wall | 6–8 km, 3–4 h | Moderate: restored and wild sections, steep steps |
| Zhangjiajie ridges | 8–12 km per day, 2 days | Moderate: stone steps, cable cars available |
| Tiger Leaping Gorge (Yunnan) | 22 km, 2 days | Hard: 1,800 m of ascent, guesthouses en route |
| Longji rice terraces | 6–10 km, half day | Easy–moderate: paved paths between villages |
The wild Great Wall is the one walk in China that genuinely surprises experienced hikers: no railings, no crowds, and 600-year-old brick underfoot.
Seasons that work
- Great Wall: April–May, September–October. Summer is punishing; winter is beautiful but icy.
- Zhangjiajie: April–June and September–November. July–August is hot and crowded.
- Tiger Leaping Gorge: March–May and October–November; the summer monsoon makes the trail dangerous.
- Longji: April–June (flooded terraces) or September (gold before harvest).
What “hiking in China” actually means logistically
Trails are rarely signposted in English, and the good ones end far from where they start. Every walk on this page needs either a driver meeting you at the far end or a night in a village. That is the part we arrange; the walking you do yourself.
What we do not offer
Multi-day treks with camping, and anything above 4,000 m. The altitude routes need permits, oxygen planning and a different insurance conversation — we would rather refer you than improvise.
Do we need permits to hike?
Not for the four walks above. Tibet and the high-altitude routes do, which is one reason we do not sell them.
Can we hike the Great Wall without a guide?
Yes on Jinshanling, but arrange the far-end pickup — the exit is a village with no taxis.
How fit do we need to be?
For the wall and Zhangjiajie, able to climb stairs for three hours. Tiger Leaping Gorge needs genuine hill fitness.
Is camping possible?
Not on these routes. Guesthouses and hotels instead.
What about altitude?
None of the four goes above 2,500 m. Yunnan’s gorge is the highest at about 2,300 m.
