The Silk Road in China, minus the romance
The Chinese Silk Road is a 3,000-kilometre line of oasis towns between Xi’an and Kashgar. It is one of the great journeys in Asia, and it is also a great deal of sitting down.
What the route actually is
The overland line runs Xi’an → Lanzhou → Zhangye → Jiayuguan → Dunhuang → Turpan → Urumqi → Kashgar. Each stop is an oasis that grew where water reached the desert — which is why they are spaced the way they are.
| Leg | How you move | Nights | Why stop |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xi’an → Lanzhou | High-speed rail, ~3h | 0–1 | Gateway; Bingling Temple side trip |
| Lanzhou → Zhangye | High-speed rail, ~3h | 1–2 | Danxia landform, Giant Buddha |
| Zhangye → Jiayuguan | High-speed rail, ~1.5h | 1 | Ming frontier fort |
| Jiayuguan → Dunhuang | High-speed rail, ~2.5h | 2 | Mogao Caves, Singing Sand Dunes |
| Dunhuang → Turpan | Overnight train or flight | 1–2 | Flaming Mountains, karez wells |
| Turpan → Urumqi | High-speed rail, ~1h | 1 | Tianchi side trip |
| Urumqi → Kashgar | Flight, ~2h | 2 | Old town, Sunday livestock market |
Distance is the enemy. A 14-day Silk Road trip is roughly 40 hours in transit. Cutting one or two stops almost always improves the trip.
Dunhuang is the reason
The Mogao Caves hold 735 caves and around 45,000 square metres of murals, painted across a thousand years. Tickets are timed and capped; the full ticket includes a guided visit to a set number of caves, and the better categories sell out about a month ahead. Photography is not allowed inside.
Plan the day around the caves, not the dunes: the Singing Sand Dunes are best in late afternoon, when the light softens and the camels head home.
Best months
May, June, September and October. July and August push Turpan past 40°C, and late October nights in Dunhuang are cold. Winter closes some side roads and gives thin, flat light.
Xinjiang practicalities
The same Chinese visa covers the region. Some areas require a permit arranged through a licensed operator, and we handle those. Security checks are frequent and slow, so we build slack into transfer days rather than pretending they do not exist.
We do not promise "no checks". We build the day so that a 40-minute checkpoint does not ruin it.
How we would build it
Twelve to sixteen days, in at Xi’an and out at Kashgar, or the reverse. Two nights in Dunhuang, one long day between Zhangye and Jiayuguan, and a rest day in Turpan. The full loop with Beijing added at the front is closer to 18 days.
Who this trip is not for
If you want pools, late breakfasts and a single base, this is the wrong route. The Silk Road rewards people who like moving and do not mind early starts.
Is the Silk Road safe?
For ordinary travel, yes. The real constraints are distance, heat, and permits.
Do we need a guide?
Not legally. But permits, drivers and cave tickets are exactly where independent travellers lose days.
Can it be combined with Beijing?
Yes — two extra days, then fly Beijing to Xi’an.
What is the single best month?
September: warm days, cool nights, and the harvest in the oases.
Is Kashgar worth the flight?
Yes if you want the western end of the story. If you are short of days, stop at Turpan.
