The Forbidden City: how to do it in half a day

980 buildings, one straight line from south to north, and a ticket system that sells out days ahead. The visit is easy; the timing is not.

Tickets: the part people get wrong

  • Tickets are sold online only, tied to your passport, and released about seven days ahead.
  • The palace is closed on Mondays — the single most common wasted day in Beijing.
  • Morning slots sell out first; afternoon slots are easier and the light is better for photographs.
  • You enter from the south (Meridian Gate) and exit north (Gate of Divine Prowess). There is no re-entry.

Book the ticket before you book anything else in Beijing. Everything on day two depends on which slot you get.

The route that works

Meridian Gate → the three great halls (Taihe, Zhonghe, Baohe) → the imperial garden → exit north into Jingshan Park. Jingshan is 15 minutes of climbing for the view back over the whole palace — the photograph that makes the visit make sense.

What people skip and should not

The Treasure Gallery and the Clock Gallery cost extra and take an hour together. They are the difference between seeing a big empty courtyard and seeing what was in it.

Practical

Three to four hours inside, plus Jingshan. Bags are scanned; tripods are not allowed. Summer: start at 08:30. Winter: the afternoon slot has warmer light and fewer people.

Is it closed on Mondays?

Yes, every Monday except public holidays.

How far ahead do tickets go on sale?

About seven days, passport-linked, and they sell out in peak season.

Can we enter from the north gate?

No. Entry is south only; exit is north only.

How long does it take?

Three to four hours at a normal pace, plus an hour for Jingshan Park.

Is it suitable for children?

Yes, but plan a shorter route — the central axis plus the garden is enough for under-tens.
