The Chengdu Panda Base: timing is everything
Pandas eat for about 14 hours a day and sleep through the rest. The difference between a great visit and a disappointing one is whether you arrive before they stop moving.
The two-hour window
Pandas are fed at opening and again in the late afternoon. Between roughly 09:30 and 15:30 in summer they lie in the shade and look like soft furniture. Arrive at 07:30–08:00, walk the adult enclosures first, and be at the cub area by 09:00.
A panda that is eating is a panda worth photographing. A panda that is sleeping is a very expensive beanbag.
What is there
| Area | What you see | Best time |
|---|---|---|
| Adult enclosures | The big males and females, often eating bamboo | 07:30–09:00 |
| Cub house / nursery | Young pandas, sometimes twins | 09:00–10:30 |
| Red panda area | Smaller, more active, and walk-through | Any time |
| Panda museum | Good context on breeding and conservation | After 10:30 |
Tickets and logistics
- Buy online with your passport; the base is 30–40 minutes from central Chengdu.
- Go on a weekday. Weekends and holidays double the queue at the cub house.
- The site is a 1.5–2 km walk between areas, with gentle slopes — comfortable, but not short.
- Combine with the Sichuan opera or a teahouse in the afternoon, not with Leshan (that is a full day).
Beyond the pandas
Chengdu itself is the reason to stay two nights: teahouses in People’s Park, the Sichuan opera’s face-changing, and food that is better than its reputation suggests. One night in Chengdu is a panda day; two nights is a city.
What time should we arrive?
07:30–08:00. The first two hours are the visit; the rest is optional.
Are the pandas visible in winter?
Yes — winter is actually better: they are more active in the cold.
How long do we need?
Two to three hours, plus 40 minutes each way from the city.
Can we hold a panda?
No. Holding and feeding experiences have been discontinued; volunteer programmes exist but book months ahead.
Is it suitable for young children?
Yes, and it is the single best activity in China for ages 4–10.
