Wander China

14 days in China: the length that actually works

Two weeks is where China stops being a series of transfers. You get four regions, one river, one wall, and two evenings where nothing is planned.

The skeleton

Beijing (3) → Xi’an (2) → Guilin & Yangshuo (3) → Shanghai (3), plus three travel days folded into the itinerary. That is 14 nights on the ground with no wasted hotel changes.

BlockNightsWhy this long
Beijing3Arrival day, Forbidden City day, wall day
Xi’an2Terracotta Army plus the city wall at dusk
Guilin & Yangshuo3Li River cruise, rice terraces, one slow countryside day
Shanghai3The Bund, a garden, and one day trip (Suzhou or Hangzhou)
Beijing Xi’an Guilin & Yangshuo Shanghai
Route at a glance: Beijing → Xi’an → Guilin & Yangshuo → Shanghai.

This is our 16-day Grand China route with two days removed — which is exactly how we build most 14-day trips.

Why 14 and not 10

At 10 days you choose between Guilin and Shanghai. At 14 you stop choosing, and the trip stops feeling like an itinerary being executed. The marginal day also costs less than the first week: no new long-haul, no new jet lag, the same local-guide model.

What to cut if you only have 12

  • Drop Shanghai to two nights and fly out from there.
  • Drop the Guilin rice terraces (a full day trip) and keep the Li River.
  • Drop Xi’an to one night — only if you accept seeing the Terracotta Army in a hurry.

What 14 days still cannot do

Tibet and Xinjiang each need a week to themselves, and a Yangtze cruise needs four nights. Adding any of them to a 14-day first trip means cutting two of the four blocks above.

Season and cost

April–May and September–October are the expensive, correct months. July–August is hot in the east and crowded everywhere; December–February is cheap and cold but excellent in the south. Two weeks in shoulder season typically costs less than ten days in Golden Week.

Is 14 days too long for a first trip?

No — it is the most common length we build, and the one with the fewest complaints about pace.

Can we do 14 days with children?

Yes, with one empty afternoon every three days and one internal flight maximum.

Do we need internal flights?

One: Beijing–Guilin or Guilin–Shanghai. The rest is high-speed rail.

Can we add a Yangtze cruise?

Yes, by replacing the Guilin block with Chongqing plus a 3–4 night cruise.

Is this a fixed product?

The skeleton is fixed; the hotels, pace and day trips are not. That is what the quote is for.
