Hangzhou: West Lake, tea hills, and how to do it without the crowds

Hangzhou is the classic add-on to a Shanghai stay — 45 minutes by high-speed rail — and the one place where the tourist board and the poets agree.

What Hangzhou actually is

A lake, a tea mountain and a city that has been a weekend escape for Chinese travellers for a thousand years. West Lake is the centre; everything else — temples, pagodas, causeways — arranges itself around ten square kilometres of water.

West Lake without the crowds

  • Go early. Between 07:00 and 09:00 the causeways belong to joggers and the lake is still.
  • Walk the Su Causeway (2.8 km) rather than the Bai Causeway: same scenery, a third of the people.
  • Skip the boat tour from the main pier; take a small boat from a quieter dock or a ferry to the Three Pools Mirroring the Moon.
  • Leifeng Pagoda is worth the climb for the view, not for the pagoda itself.

Hangzhou rewards slowness. Two half-days beat one packed day, especially if you add the tea hills.

The Longjing tea hills

Twenty minutes from the lake, the villages of Longjing and Meijiawu sit in terraced tea fields. Spring (late March to mid-April) is picking season; the same cup costs three times as much. A tea-house lunch in the fields is the single best half-day in the region.

Getting there

High-speed rail from Shanghai Hongqiao takes 45–60 minutes and runs every few minutes. From Beijing it is 4.5 hours; from Guangzhou, 6.

How we build it

Hangzhou slots into the end of a Shanghai stay or the start of a Guilin route. We usually pair it with a private driver for the tea hills, because the buses stop at the coach parks rather than the villages.

Is Hangzhou worth one day?

Yes, if you start early and skip the boat queue. It is not worth a day if you arrive at 11:00.

Is it better than Suzhou?

Different: Hangzhou is landscape, Suzhou is gardens and canals. With two days, do both.

When is the best time?

March to May and September to November. Summer is hot and crowded; winter is quiet and grey.

Do we need a guide?

No, but a driver for the tea hills saves two hours of taxi hunting.
