China in autumn (September–November)
Autumn is the best all-round season in China: dry, clear, and comfortable from Harbin to Guilin. It is also where the biggest holiday trap sits.

Avoid 1–7 October (Golden Week). The week immediately after it — 8–15 October — is the single best-value window of the Chinese year: perfect weather, suddenly empty.
The Golden Week rule
Every site, train and hotel in the country is at capacity for seven days. If your dates overlap, we re-sequence: put the wall and the Terracotta Army after 8 October, and use the first week for cities where the crowds spread out.
Autumn colour, honestly
- Beijing — ginkgo on the streets, late October to mid-November.
- Jiuzhaigou — the famous colour window is mid-to-late October, and it is genuinely crowded.
- Guilin — rice terraces turn gold in late September, before the harvest.
What autumn costs
September and late October are peak-priced; early November is the value window. Book rail two to three weeks ahead either way.
Is October better than April?
Similar weather; October has Golden Week, April has the May holiday. Both are avoidable weeks.
When exactly is the best week?
8–15 October: after the holiday, before the cold.
Is November too cold?
In Beijing, cold but clear. In Yunnan and the south, still pleasant.
Is autumn good for photography?
The best season for light. Zhangjiajie and Yunnan in particular.
Does the Yangtze cruise run in autumn?
Yes, and October is its most popular month.
