China in spring (March–May)
Spring is the most popular window for a reason: mild everywhere except the far south-west, and the two best months for Beijing and Xi’an. It is also when you must book earliest.

The single best two weeks of the Chinese year for a first trip are the last week of April and the first week of May — minus the 1–5 May holiday, which is a domestic travel crush.
The two weeks to avoid
Labour Day (1–5 May) and the Qingming weekend in early April. Both fill trains and hotels; neither is avoidable at short notice. If your dates are fixed, book transport first and build the itinerary around it.
Spring specifics people ask about
- Cherry blossom — Wuhan, Wuxi and Beijing’s Yuyuantan, late March to early April. It is a two-week window and it moves.
- Tea picking — Longjing near Hangzhou, late March to mid-April. The same cup costs three times as much in picking season.
- Terraces — Longji and Yuanyang fill with water in April and May; that is when the photographs happen.
What spring costs you
Peak-season pricing on hotels and the tightest train availability of the year. Two to three months ahead is comfortable; six weeks is workable.

Late April: warm, green, and before the May holiday.
Will it rain a lot?
In the south, yes — but as afternoon showers. Bring a shell, not boots.
Is spring good for the Great Wall?
The best season. Green hills, clear air, and temperatures that let you walk for three hours.
