China in summer (June–August)
Summer is the season people get wrong. The east is hot and humid, the coast has typhoons, and the north-west is at its best. Choose the region, not the month.
Where summer works

If your dates are fixed to July or August, go north-west or go high: Gansu, Qinghai, Yunnan, Harbin. Do not fight the Yangtze delta in August.
Rain, properly understood
Chinese summer rain is usually a two-hour afternoon downpour, not a lost day. The exceptions are the plum rain season in the delta (mid-June to early July, days of drizzle) and typhoon season on the coast (August to September, when flights get cancelled).
Why we do not sell Tibet
It is a permit regime, not a visa regime: you need a licensed guide, a fixed itinerary approved in advance, and altitude that is not for everyone. We would rather say no than sell a version that cuts corners.
What summer costs
Domestic school holidays run July to late August, so Chinese families travel too. Hotels and trains are busy, but prices are still below Golden Week.
Is summer really unbearable?
In Shanghai and Chongqing, yes. In Yunnan, Gansu and Harbin, no.
What about the pandas in summer?
They are indoors in air conditioning by 11:00. Go at opening.
Can we still hike the Great Wall in July?
Early morning, two hours maximum, and take more water than you think.
Is it typhoon season?
Coastal China, August to September. Inland routes are unaffected.
Best summer itinerary?
Beijing three nights, then west to Gansu or south-west to Yunnan.
